What Is Lymphoedema?

A couple sits in a doctors office, engaged in conversation. The doctor, wearing a white coat and blue pants, holds a tablet. The couple is casually dressed, with the man in a gray sweater and jeans, and the woman in a beige sweater.

Lymphoedema is a chronic condition caused by a build-up of lymphatic fluid, leading to swelling, most commonly in the arms or legs.

It can occur due to:

  • Damage to the lymphatic system (e.g. surgery, cancer treatment)
  • Genetic or developmental conditions
  • Chronic venous insufficiency
  • Obesity or reduced mobility

Common symptoms

  • Persistent swelling in limbs
  • Heaviness or tightness
  • Reduced mobility
  • Skin changes or thickening
  • Increased risk of infection (cellulitis)

Early diagnosis and treatment are key to preventing progression.

    Why Seek Lymphoedema Treatment?

Without appropriate management, lymphoedema can worsen over time and impact:

    • Mobility and physical function
    • Skin health and infection risk
    • Comfort and daily activities
    • Emotional wellbeing and confidence

A structured treatment plan can significantly improve symptoms and quality of life.
