A blood test is one of the simplest and most informative things you can do for your health. A single sample, taken in a few minutes, can reveal how your organs are functioning, whether you are lacking key nutrients, and whether conditions such as diabetes or thyroid disease are developing quietly in the background.
Yet many people only ever have a blood test when something is already wrong. This guide explains what a routine screen looks at, why it is worth doing when you feel well, and how private testing works at Healthium Clinics.
What is included in a routine health screen?
A standard health screen usually combines several individual tests. The most common are:
Full blood count (FBC). Measures your red cells, white cells and platelets. It can flag anaemia, infection, inflammation and some blood disorders.
Kidney function. Checks how efficiently your kidneys are filtering waste. Early kidney problems rarely cause symptoms, so this is one of the most valuable routine checks.
Liver function. Looks at enzymes and proteins produced by the liver. Raised levels can indicate fatty liver, the effects of alcohol or medication, or other liver conditions.
Cholesterol and lipids. Measures total cholesterol, HDL (often called “good” cholesterol), LDL and triglycerides. Together with blood pressure and family history, these help estimate your cardiovascular risk.
HbA1c. Shows your average blood sugar over the previous two to three months. It is the main test for diagnosing pre-diabetes and type 2 diabetes.
Thyroid function. Assesses whether your thyroid is over- or under-active. Thyroid problems are common, particularly in women, and often present as tiredness, weight change or low mood that is easy to put down to other causes.
Tests worth adding
Depending on your symptoms, age and history, your doctor may suggest additional tests:
- Iron studies and ferritin, if you are tired, pale or have heavy periods
- Vitamin B12 and folate, particularly for those on a vegan diet or certain medications
- Vitamin D, which is low in a large proportion of the UK population, especially after winter
- Hormone profiles, including tests relevant to fertility, perimenopause or testosterone levels
- Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) for men, discussed on an individual basis
- Sexual health screening, including HIV, syphilis and hepatitis, offered discreetly and confidentially
Why test when you feel well?
Most of the conditions above develop slowly. High cholesterol has no symptoms. Kidney function can decline by half before anyone notices. Type 2 diabetes is frequently diagnosed years after it began. A routine screen gives you a baseline while you are healthy, so that any change over time is visible early, when it is easiest to address.
There is a second benefit. Many people carry a vague worry about their health that a clear set of results can settle. Knowing where you stand is often a relief in itself.
How private blood testing works at Healthium
The process is straightforward:
- A consultation. Your doctor discusses your concerns and recommends the tests that are actually relevant, rather than a fixed package.
- The sample. Taken by an experienced clinician in a calm, private setting. Some tests require fasting; we will tell you in advance.
- Results and explanation. Results are usually available within a few days. Rather than a printout, you receive a proper explanation of what each result means for you, and a plan if anything needs following up.
Same-day appointments are frequently available, and you do not need a referral from your NHS GP.
Understanding your results
A result outside the reference range is not automatically a problem, and a result inside it is not automatically fine. Reference ranges are statistical, not personal. Your doctor interprets your numbers in the context of your age, symptoms, medications and history. This is why we always pair results with a conversation rather than simply emailing a report.
Common questions
Do I need to fast? Only for certain tests, most commonly a fasting glucose or lipid profile. If fasting is needed, we will ask you to avoid food for eight to twelve hours beforehand. Water is fine.
How often should I have a health screen? For most healthy adults, every one to two years is reasonable, or more often if you have a family history of heart disease, diabetes or other conditions, or if you are monitoring a known issue.
Can I share the results with my NHS GP? Yes. We can provide a copy for your records, and with your consent we can send it directly to your practice.
