As summer ends, the skin often shows the cost of it. Sun exposure, heat, travel and late nights leave their mark as pigmentation, dryness, fine lines and a general loss of glow. It is also, not coincidentally, the season when the more transformative skin treatments come back into their own. NeoGen plasma is the clearest example. It is one of the most effective regenerative treatments available, and autumn is when we recommend having it.
What is NeoGen?
NeoGen uses nitrogen plasma energy to regenerate the skin. The device converts nitrogen gas into plasma, a highly energised state, and delivers it to the skin in controlled pulses. Unlike lasers, which target specific colours in the skin, plasma energy heats the tissue evenly and predictably from the surface down. This triggers a deep, whole-skin regenerative response: the old, damaged outer layers are gradually shed, while collagen and elastin production is stimulated in the layers beneath.
The result is skin that is renewed in structure, not just in appearance. And because the response continues for up to twelve months after treatment, the improvement keeps building long after you leave the clinic.
What NeoGen treats
NeoGen is unusually versatile. A single treatment approach addresses:
- Fine lines and wrinkles
- Loss of firmness and mild sagging, including around the jawline
- Sun damage and pigmentation
- Uneven skin texture and enlarged pores
- Acne scarring
- Laxity of the upper and lower eyelids, an area few other treatments can reach safely
It can be used across the whole face, or targeted to specific areas such as the eyes, neck or hands.
Low-energy or high-energy: two ways to use it
One of the advantages of NeoGen is that the energy can be adjusted to suit your goals and your diary.
Low-energy treatments are delivered as a course, typically three to four sessions a few weeks apart. Each session causes mild redness and a light flaking for a few days, and you can carry on with most normal activities. The results build progressively with each session.
High-energy treatments deliver a more significant regeneration in a single session. Recovery is more noticeable: the skin darkens and peels over five to seven days as the old surface layer is shed, revealing new skin beneath. This is the option for patients who want the most dramatic improvement and can plan a week of downtime around it.
Your practitioner will recommend the approach that best fits your skin and circumstances at your consultation.
Why autumn is the right time
There are three reasons.
Sun exposure. After NeoGen, new skin is more sensitive to UV and needs protecting for several weeks. This is far easier to manage in October than in June. Having the treatment in autumn also means you are repairing the summer’s sun damage rather than adding to it.
Recovery. The days of redness or peeling that follow treatment are easier to accommodate when there are fewer outdoor events and social commitments, and a scarf or a quiet week at home is entirely normal.
Timing of results. Because results develop over months, a treatment in September or October means your skin is at its best by the festive season and into the new year, and continues improving into spring.
What to expect at your appointment
Your consultation includes a full skin assessment, a discussion of what you want to achieve, and a clear explanation of the likely recovery for the energy level recommended. On the day of treatment, a numbing cream is applied for around 45 minutes. The treatment itself takes 20 to 40 minutes and feels like a warm sensation across the skin. You will leave with specific aftercare instructions and a follow-up appointment.
Aftercare in brief
Good aftercare protects your result. For the first week, keep the skin clean and moisturised with the products we recommend, avoid picking or exfoliating as the old surface lifts away, and keep out of direct sun. From then on, daily SPF 50 for at least six weeks is essential, and we advise continuing it year-round. Makeup can usually be worn again once the skin has settled, typically after the peeling stage has finished.
Suitability
NeoGen is suitable for most skin types. It is not recommended during pregnancy, for anyone with active skin infection or certain skin conditions, or within a few weeks of significant sun exposure or a tan, which is another reason we favour the cooler months. Your practitioner will assess suitability at your consultation.
