There has been a great deal of public conversation about medical weight loss over the past few years, and much of it has focused on medication. That misses the point. The medication is one tool among several, and it only works well, and safely, as part of a properly supervised programme.
This article explains how weight management is approached at Healthium Clinics, why we start with an assessment rather than a prescription, and what you can expect if you decide to enquire.
Why weight is a medical matter
Carrying excess weight is not a question of willpower. It is influenced by genetics, hormones, sleep, stress, medication, medical conditions and the environment we live in. It is also strongly linked to type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, joint problems, sleep apnoea and certain cancers.
Treating weight as a medical issue means treating it with the same care as any other condition: a proper assessment, a diagnosis of contributing factors, a plan, and ongoing review. That is the model we follow.
Step one: assessment
Every patient begins with a consultation with one of our doctors. This is not a formality. It covers:
- Your weight history and what has and has not worked before
- Your medical history, current medications and any relevant conditions
- Your lifestyle, including diet, activity, sleep and stress
- Measurements including weight, height, BMI and, where useful, waist circumference and blood pressure
We will usually recommend blood tests at this stage. These check for conditions that can contribute to weight gain, such as an underactive thyroid, and establish a baseline for blood sugar, cholesterol and liver function, which we then track as the programme progresses.
Step two: a plan built around you
Based on the assessment, your doctor will discuss the options. For some patients, structured support with nutrition, activity and behaviour change is the right starting point. For others, particularly those with a BMI above the threshold at which medical treatment is recommended, or with weight-related health conditions, prescription weight-loss medication may be considered as part of the plan.
Whether medication is appropriate is a clinical decision made by your doctor, based on your individual circumstances, eligibility criteria and any contraindications. It is not something we prescribe on request, and it is never prescribed without an assessment.
Step three: ongoing supervision
This is where doctor-led programmes differ most from buying medication online. Regular follow-up appointments allow your doctor to:
- Monitor your progress and adjust the plan
- Manage any side effects, which are common in the early weeks and usually manageable with the right advice
- Repeat blood tests to check that the changes are healthy ones
- Support you through plateaus, which are a normal part of any weight loss journey
- Plan for the long term, including how to maintain the results
Weight loss that is too fast, or achieved without attention to nutrition and muscle mass, tends not to last. Supervision is what turns a short-term result into a lasting one.
What results can you expect?
Results vary from person to person and depend on the approach, your starting point and how consistently the plan is followed. We do not promise specific outcomes, and we would be wary of any clinic that does. What we can say is that a combination of medical support, nutritional guidance and regular review gives most patients a far better chance of meaningful, sustained weight loss than repeated attempts alone.
Is this programme right for you?
Our weight management service is designed for adults who:
- Have a BMI in the range where medical intervention is recommended, or a lower BMI with weight-related health conditions
- Have tried lifestyle changes without lasting success
- Want a structured, medically supervised approach rather than a quick fix
- Are prepared to attend regular reviews
Certain conditions and medications mean medical weight loss treatment is not suitable, and your doctor will discuss this with you at the assessment. The programme is not intended for people who are within a healthy weight range.
Pricing and how to enquire
An initial weight management consultation with one of our doctors is £99. Blood tests are from £200 depending on the panel recommended. If medication forms part of your plan, the cost is discussed at that stage and depends on the treatment prescribed.
Healthium Clinics is a CQC-registered, doctor-led clinic at Badgemore Park, Henley-on-Thames. To book an initial consultation, call 01628 876439 or use our online booking system. Video consultations are available for follow-up appointments where appropriate.
